  How To Play Mah Jong

How to Play Mah Jong by Josh Riverside

Mah Jong is an ancient Chinese game. As time passed on, in different places various versions of the game cropped up like Cantonese, Japanese, western classical, Taiwanese, Filipino, Fijian and Vietnamese. Therefore, one needs to be aware of the fact that it has many variants. International standard rules were created to regulate the changes and in 2002, First World Mah Jong Championship was held.

The best way to learn the game is by simply playing it. As with all other sports, the more you practice something, the more mastership you gain in it. Here also the same rule applies. Minimum of two players are required to start the game. The equipment of the game includes different kinds of tiles- circle suit, bamboo suit, character suit, wind tiles, dragon tiles, flower tiles and joker tiles. There are usually 144 tiles in total but 136, 144, 148 or 152 are also allowed.

A full game has 16 hands of play in 4 rounds named after 4 directions and each player has a particular direction. All the players throw the dice and the player with the highest score gets to be the first one to start the game. Next step is to build the wall, which means to arrange the tiles in a stack. The tiles are mixed and arranged in 18 stacks in a horizontal row in front of each player in the form of a square. The stack is then broken and each player gets 13 tiles. The rest of the tiles are known as the wall and kept in the middle. Each player starts to discard the tiles and draws from the wall. Objective is to make 4 sets and a pair; sequence of 3 consecutive same suit tiles or 3 identical tiles or a set of 4 of a kind. Each point has a certain monetary value that is predefined by players. Whoever does this first is the winner and if the wall gets exhausted without a winner, the game is a draw. There are many variations in rules and scoring besides there are even penalties for breaking certain rules.

Mah Jong is a complicated and a "gambler's game" and an aficionado of the game must be well versed with it.
