  The First Unreal Estate

The First Unreal Estate by Aaron Crow

I can see the moon, so I know it's real. We sent people there and I saw them walk on the moon on my television screen.

I have seen Norrath. I have seen human characters walk on Norrath on my computer screen.

From a functional standpoint which is less real? I will never actually stand on Norrath but I'm virtually certain to never actually stand on the moon, either. There's no plan to send people back to the moon in the reasonable future so, for all intents and purposes, the moon isn't a real place that can be visited which in turn means that ownership or non-ownership of lunar land is actually less useful than ownership of virtual land in a MMORPG. After all, you can virtually access that land via the game, and even buy and sell it with people without looking like a con-artist.

But wait, it gets more interesting: if virtual land is a more concrete commodity than lunar land it begs the question of what else is. What other things can be classified as Unreal Estate and where do they fall in the spectrum of "realness"? Martian land is already being bought and sold. Could not an enterprising executive begin selling Venutian land? Well okay, a planet where steel melts in the open air would be a hard sell, but couldn't it be done? The vast majority of lunar land-owners aren't consulting with architects to build a summer home there - they buy it for the novelty. So couldn't land on Venus be a novelty?

What about stars? You can pay to name a star whatever you like (within reason, I'm sure.) Couldn't you buy and sell stars? Solar systems? Galaxies? What's the limit?

Think about it. What other kinds of Unreal Estate are waiting for someone like you to market them?

Here's a little something to get you thinking: the term "Unreal Estate" was first applied to buying and selling land on the moon. Check out http://www.sfgate.com
